Professional programming when installing used OEM auto parts
Used OEM replacement auto parts may need to be professionally programmed when being installed into a vehicle. especially if a module is replaced or an existing module needs to be reprogrammed. Programming information is necessary to ensure the vehicle remain compliant with regulations and operates properly. Car manufacturers prefer that certified professionals install and program used OEM auto parts with manufacturer authorized equipment.
At GitPart, we organize part types which are in need of professional programming into our “Electronics & Programmable” part group. Additionally, after installing certain essential drivetrain part types (engine, transmission, etc), professional programming may be recommended by the manufacturer for proper sync-up of the replacement part.
Here are some things to consider when programming auto parts:
Technical Information
A lack of technical information or an installer skills deficit during the replacement parts installation can lead to permanent damage to a vehicle's components. This is one of the reasons behind the manufacturers best practice of certified professionals using manufacturer certified installation and programming equipment to install replacement OEM auto parts (used or new).
OEM Information
Up-to-date programming information can be obtained from the original equipment (OE) manufacturer. This information can be found on sites like NASTF.org.
Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) information
Most aftermarket sources provide up-to-date TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) information. If a TSB lists a replacement part and software reprogramming, the component may operate differently and need to respond differently to the onboard computer.
